The Shutter: Chado Tea House on West Third Ends 22 Year Run

2012_04_chadoshut.jpg
A couple of years ago, Eater heard that Chado Tea Room was possibly looking for a new home. Chado stayed put, and has since done brisk business in loose tea sales, catering and teas for two. Frequently, large groups would filter in to celebrate an engagement or new baby. Reasonably priced and with an enormous tea selection, Chado was well-loved by locals. The inside of the place always smelled like strawberries and melted butter, even if the wallpaper was peeling and the floor was worn. Unfortunately, Chado on Third is on its way out. Chado’s owner, Reena Shah, confirms that the building has been sold and all tenants were asked to leave. The final day of business for this Chado location is August 31. Chado’s other locations in Pasadena, Hollywood, and Little Tokyo remain in operation.

By now the world knows that Yojisan Sushi opened earlier this week. Finally, have a look inside the dining space and sushi bar. Giacomino Drago (Il Pastaio, Via Alloro) and sushi chef Yoji Tajima (SHU Sushi House Unico) collaborated on this concept, hoping to bring modern Japanese cuisine as well as (more) sushi to downtown Beverly Hills. They tasked architect Dan Brunn with creating a delicate, serene space that was full of light. Wander through the space, and it’s clear that Brunn delivered. Open now for lunch and dinner.

Republic Wireless opening up reservation system next week in advance of summer beta program

Closed

We’ve already known that Republic Wireless was planning to reopen the beta program for its hybrid WiFi / cellular service this summer, and the company has now finally detailed exactly how that beta will take place. For starters, it’ll only be open to those who have already signed up to the company’s email list or tried to place an order when that option was available last November, but that’s still not a guarantee to get in. Starting next week, those folks will receive an email with details on how to take part in the company’s online reservation system, after which you’ll then have a week to claim a spot in one of the beta waves that will be rolling out over the course of the summer. Still no word on that new handset that was also promised for April, but you can find all the details on the beta program at the link below.

[Thanks, Andy]

Coming Attractions: Greenbar Collective Sets Up Distillery Downtown

Closed

Friday, April 13, 2012, by Daniela Galarza

2012_04_greenhouse.JPGBeer breweries are so last year. This year, LA gets its very own distillery, Greenbar Collective. It’s the first to open in the county since prohibition, according to husband and wife team and owners Litty Mathew and Melkon Khosrovian. The couple have been making liquor in SoCal since 1994 — out of Monrovia. Their original concept was called Modern Spirits. Spurred by increased demand for their products and the revitalization of downtown, they are bringing their renamed Greenbar Collective west. The new space will begin operations next week. While the distillery is not open to the public, Greenbar’s research and development team will be partnering with bartenders and mixologists around town to host a monthly cocktail class. Open to the public, each class will be limited to 12 and cost $20. The first class is scheduled for the end of May. [EaterWire]

The powerful impact of our grazing herd in the vineyard

Closed

As we get to know our grazing herd out at Tablas Creek, we’re becoming increasingly convinced of its effectiveness.  A photo will illustrate the impact.  It shows the border between two vineyard blocks, on the right one that had the animals in residence for the previous five days, and on the left the new, bushy block where we’d moved them that morning:

Grazing_border_0001

We’ve been amazed how fast they can turn under a cover crop.  That browsed area is about an acre and a half, and they cleared it out in less than a week.  Walking through you can see their manure spread throughout the area.  And the divots that their hooves have made breaks up the surface.  When we got rain, the areas that had been grazed soaked that rain right up, helped surely by the uneven surface.

The impact of the added fertility brought by the manure is still to be felt, but it’s spread thickly enough that it’s sure to have an effect.  We’ll be paying attention to how the grazed vineyard blocks fare this summer compared to those where the cover crop was mowed and to where it was disked or spaded into the soil.

Four more photos of our fuzzy workers, so you can get to know them along with us.  First, two of our Dorper sheep, in a little shelter we move along with the mobile fence:

Animals_0003

Next, one of the Alpacas, who we’ve named “Boo”:

Animals_0002

And Fiona, our ever-vigilant guard donkey:

Animals_0001

And finally the two lambs who were born last month, already grown a lot:

Animals_0004

The animals’ time in the vineyard is coming to an end for this year, as with budbreak we’re going to have to move them to the pasture we’ve been preparing.  We’ve already noticed some of the alpacas browsing on the bark of the dormant grapevines.  The sap must be flowing!

Value Alert: 2007 Atlas Peak Napa Cab

Closed

I stopped in to pick up some wine at The Wine Cellar of Stoneham today. Before going I spoke with Mike Reardon on the phone and asked him if he had anything new or interesting I should check out. He mentioned this wine – the 2007 Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon.

There is an ocean of wine looking to get our attention at any given moment. After a while the names start to blur together. Avalon. Geyser Peak. Atlas Peak. Without knowing any better I start to assume they’ll all be servicable but otherwise non-descript juicy red wines. But this one was special.

Atlas Peak is all about producing wine from mountainside sites in Napa Valley: Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Spring Mountain. They produce bottlings from each of these sites in the $60 range. The Napa Valley wine retails for $38.

Here are my thoughts on their 2007 Napa Cab. I think it could do really well in a blind tasting with wines costing up to $60.

2007 Atlas Peak Napa Valley Cabernet
$38 Release Price
14.5% Alcohol
$19.99 at the Wine Cellar of Stoneham

What a beautifully balanced, flavorful, and enjoyable Napa Cab. Very aromatic right upon opening. On the nose I get dried blackberries, supporting savory notes and a little perfume in the background. Mouth-filling with slightly sweet chalky tannins and a milk chocolate after taste. Good grip, a touch of a acid, and nice length. An impressive accomplishment at or around $20. If you like Honig Cab (which I do) I think you’ll like this too.

Big Cahors, authentic and made for the hunter-gatherer in you, with black licorice and meat. There is some animal that is “pheasanting” in the bottle, covered in rose petals and mint. Big, burly tannins. This a wine for the true Cahors lover. Bring on the cassoulet! Biodynamic.

Entertainment Device Convergence: The State of Play

Closed

“There has been a fundamental shift in the relationship between the producers and consumers of content,” said Hanna Kang, brand manager at Marvell, “creating a dynamic, two-way experience … . The same forces that are revolutionizing today’s television experience will transform numerous vertical applications for small businesses and large enterprises, enhancing the way we all work, connect with each other and collaborate globally.”

The tumultuous convergence of entertainment devices, greater interaction with the television-viewing experience, and increased involvement of social networks were all in the Klieg lights at the IP&TV World Forum, the Internet television show I attended recently in London.

I was immersed in the future of television content delivery mashed with user interaction. Here’s a rundown of some of the show’s highlights, along with an explanation of some of the more interesting technologies and a look at the state of play today.

Dual-Screen Engagement

If there’s one thing that stood out at the show, it was dual-screen engagement — meaning the use of tablets and phones (called the “second screen,” or “companion device”) in conjunction with televisions. We’re seeing a significant uptake in the use of additional screens while watching TV.

They are being used as viewing screens, remote controls, and as devices for researching and socializing.

The screens are being supplied by TV equipment providers, and also purchased independently (tablet and phones) by consumers themselves.

Barriers to Dual Screen

The second screen still lacks a full content lineup. Pay TV providers should meet the challenge to not just optimize the companion experience, but own it, said Derrick Frost, senior VP of global IP video for Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), who presented a panel on “Optimizing the Companion Experience.”

“The runaway success of the companion tablet has brought control, context and social communications to the viewing experience,” Frost told TechNewsWorld. “Now it is time to focus on the content, and remove the walls that prevent some content to be streamed to the companion device.”

OTT Video

Over-the-Top video (OTT) refers to Internet-delivered content. Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), a heavyweight in the U.S., and Amazon’s (Nasdaq: AMZN) Lovefilm in the UK are examples of the genre.

Delivery is by PC, tablet, phone, television — including smart TVs (those with Internet connectivity) — and uniquely OTT products like set-top box Roku. Classic Pay TV content is generally being moved to the cloud.

Hybrid Content

A mix of broadcast and Internet-delivered content is called “Hybrid.” Video on Demand (VoD) delivered over the Internet, coupled with classic cable systems or over-the-air broadcasts, is an example of this technology.

EPGs (electronic program guides) are being taken very seriously in this medium, and are looked on as differentiators between classic and OTT delivery. Look for upcoming innovative EPG solutions.

Hbb-Next, a European hybrid system that’s synchronized between broadcast and Internet, may end up stateside. It is likely to include facial recognition and other search tweaks.

Disruptive Technologies

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) TV, an aggregator of OTT mixed with search and pass-through to classic delivery mechanisms like cable, does not fit into any of the above categories.

Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) ballyhooed next-generation Apple TV is also likely to be disruptive, and momentum that has been gained with the iStore can be harnessed.

Upcoming Super Chips

New chips are coming, designed for the interactive connected TV platform. They are designed to provide better video and improved audio. One maker is Marvell, which is producing Google TV’s next generation of silicon.

“Marvell envisions that interactive TV will become the command center for our connected lifestyles,” said Hanna Kang, brand manager for Marvell’s digital entertainment business unit.

“There has been a fundamental shift in the relationship between the producers and consumers of content,” Kang told TechNewsWorld, “creating a dynamic, two-way experience featuring real-time global news, social network, entertainment and information. The same forces that are revolutionizing today’s television experience will transform numerous vertical applications for small businesses and large enterprises, enhancing the way we all work, connect with each other and collaborate globally.”

Fragmentation of Delivery

Fragmentation of delivery is likely to become even more prevalent than it has been, with multiple major players looking to get into the game.

The HTML5 standard may steamroll over some existing products.

Facebook and Twitter

Wry textual observations made by viewers while watching television using social networks like Twitter are here to stay — as are all aspects of social viewing.

“Watching television is rapidly evolving into a social experience, with users in charge of the timing of the content they want to watch, accompanied by a desire to share the viewing experience with their friends,” Dov Moran, CEO of Comigo, told TechNewsWorld.

State of Games Console

Games are being delivered via TV, tablet and phone now.

We’re seeing classic game consoles that have surreptitiously been a way to get Blu-ray players into homes — like Xbox and PlayStation — become suitable OTT delivery mechanisms.

Tablets and phones may replace games consoles. On-demand cloud gaming provider OnLive is a player in this area.

Mobile Apps

Mobile apps on the second screen that react to watermarked audio and launch targeted content are beginning to appear.

UK broadcaster Channel 4 has just made available its second screen iOS application for a fee.

Episodes of the show “Facejacker” are embedded with sub-audible tones that allow content to be unlocked on the second screen.

Content Delivered via the Web

YouTube is the still the frontrunner in this area, with broadcasters often uploading video to YouTube at the same time that it’s uploaded to its catch-up service.

Personal channel-building functionality for users, along with the more common social network mashing, is included. In addition to YouTube via PC, we are seeing YouTube apps in TVs, smartphones and tablets that can be squirted over to the TV.

These websites are also blurring the lines between those that have historically provided the content and the viewer, with the viewer — in the case of YouTube and others — supplying the content.

The Numbers

“By the end of 2015, consumers will have an array of ways to engage with TV services, both on and off their TV screens,” predicted Rob Gallagher, principal analyst and head of broadband and TV research at Informa Telecoms and Media.

“Nearly 1.5 billion connected TVs, games consoles and other Internet-enabled TV devices will have been sold, 1.7 billion people will use smartphones, and 372 million will own tablets,” Gallagher told TechNewsWorld. “This proliferation of devices will greatly expand and enhance the ways in which consumers discover, watch, interact with and talk about TV, creating opportunities and threats for established and wannabe TV industry players alike.”

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Closed

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

Deal Alert: 2009 Sanford Pinot Noir

Closed

Sanford’s entry level Pinot Noir is a wine I’ve enjoyed tremendously and reliably over the years. They’re one of the wineries featured in Sideways and although Rick Sanford departed long ago, the wines continue to remind me why I still like them each time I taste them. After being purchased by Terlato, Rick Sanford evidently didn’t like the lack of commitment shown towards organic farming and started Alma Rosa. His name remains on the label and as with a lot of things prices have risen noticeably over the last 10 years.

Over the holidays I had a bunch of nice wines out to share with family. None drew more praise than a bottle of 2007 Sanford Pinot Noir.

Here are my notes on the 2007:

For me, this wine finds that elusive intersection between tasting really good and being high quality. Slightly darker than your average Pinot Noir. I get rich dark cherries, ripe strawberries, and slightly sweet baking spices on the nose. A really enjoyable mouth feel – ample presence but silky smooth. Higher than average viscosity: It’s rich but has tremendous finesse. Never gets heavy. A real beauty. At 5 years of age, this is showing very nicely.

I liked it a lot. Guests went so gonzo for it I don’t see how I could score it any lower. I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many collective raves for a wine from this crowd [that appreciates wine].

93/100 WWP: Outstanding

It’s hard to find this wine south of $30 regardless of vintage. In looking around a bit I found an amazing price on the 2009 vintage. 2009 is a great vintage for California Pinot and given the track record of this producer I’m willing to take a chance on buying some without tasting it first.

The price is $20.99/bottle at Esquin Wines, eligible for 5% off a straight 12 bottle case. Some retailers sell half bottles for more! (they assure me these are full bottles) Shipping costs vary depending on your location but top out at $44 for a case shipped to the east coast (they don’t ship to MA, that would be illegal). $23.60 fully loaded or less depending on where you’re located.

Esquin is based in Seattle and has a sister e-commerce site at MadWine.com. This wine is a newsletter special and isn’t available online. The best way to order is old school over the phone:

Esquin Wine Merchants at 888-682-9463

Deal hound friends will note that this wine doesn’t show up on wine-searcher.com without Wine Searcher Pro. Pro adds listings for retailers who don’t sponsor their listings on Wine-Searcher and the ability to create email alerts for wines matching your desired criteria. For example you can create a listing for “2009 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir that ships to MA for less than $60″. That search might never turn up anything but it’s worth a shot!

I’d love if you subscribed to The Wellesley Wine Press if you like hearing about wine deals like this.

Question of the Day: What do you think of this deal? Find any other good ones lately?
